Equipment
Conditions for use of club equipment
1. New and novice paddlers are permitted a trial to decide if they wish to become financial members.
2. Experienced paddlers must pay full annual membership before using the waka
3. Non-club members can assist paddlers in such roles as coaching and / or tutoring. Non-club members can be invited to fill a vacant seat if a member is unavailable.
4. On any occasion, an experienced steerer is mandatory within the crew on the waka. Novice steerers may practise in safe conditions under the direction of an experienced steerer.
5. An established crew will have a manager who may be someone in or outside of the crew. The manager is responsible for the organisation of the crew and communication between their crew and the club captain.
6. Club members are responsible for the club equipment they use.
7. Any damage to club equipment, waka or general club property must be reported immediately by-way of an incident report form. If the damage is deemed caused by inegligence or the like, the executive committee reserves the right to recoup repair costs/ replacement costs from the person / parties involved.
8. All members are encouraged to share in the work of moving waka to and from required areas and place back to their resting areas.
9. Paddlers or crews requesting use of the waka without wishing to take up membership must submit a request to Te Kauika o Patuharakeke Incorporated with adequate details of use and reasonable time prior to the requested date (i.e. date, time, duration, place of use, contact details of person responsible for the equipment while in your possession)
Controlled Flip and Float
As part of the Health and Safety procedures, a capsize waka procedure, often referred to as a “Flip and Float”, is essential for members to understand prior to going out for a paddle. A flip and float drill is good to practice often with your roopu to ensure everyone understands their roles and how to respond in the event that a waka capsizes.
