Whangārei Te Rerenga Parāoa

Whangārei Te Rerenga Parāoa is home to a variety of moana environments that will be common areas of use for members of Te Kauika o Patuharakeke Waka Ama. It is important for members to understand the different environments within our area and the risks associated with these environments.Within Te Rohe o Patuharakeke, our taiao can be split into five types: The Moana  (Sea), Awa (Rivers), Roto (Lakes) and Whanga (Harbour), and Pāpuni (Dam).

The Kaiurungi (Steerer) designated for the paddle / voyage will have an in-depth understanding of the layout of our marine environment and is responsible for checking the weather conditions prior to entering the water. The range of both marine and freshwater environments gives members a unique and unforgettable experience.

Te Takiwā o Patuharakeke

Whangārei Terenga Parāoa is a culturally, ecologically, spiritually and economically signicant taonga to the people of Patuharakeke. Patuharakeke has strong ties to the waters of Whangārei Terenga Paraoa, and Te Ākau/Bream Bay and our shore islands. These area considered a taonga handed down to us with reverence from our tūpuna. Our whakapapa and local history is woven throughout our rohe, from the highest ranges of our native ngahere in Pukekauri and the Piroa/ Brynderwyn Hills, it owns through our many freshwater awa including but not limited to; Pukekauri, Takahiwai, Ruakākā, Uretiti, and Waipū, connecting us to our Moana in Te Ākau.
